40 words to call snow in Finnish

As Natalia told us, curiously in Finnish there is no verb to "snow". They call it "sataa lunta": it rains snow.

The list of the more than 40 words for Finnish snow that gn0sis puts is the following.

Frosty precipitation that is still falling

1.- lumi: snow
2.- pyry: rain of snow
3.- myräkkä: snow storm
4.- rae: hail
5.- räntä: sleet
6.- tuisku: rain of snow with strong wind
7.- laviini: small avalanche

Frosty rainfall mixed with water

8.- hyhmä: snow floating on the water
9.- loska: very wet snow; snow, water and mud mixed together

17.- Rail: pressure peak on ice
18.- röpelö: ice that is not smooth, uneven
19.- tökkö: ice with frost on top

A word for snow: röpelö
This type of ice that is not smooth, on the Joensuu lake, would be röpelö

20.- iljanne: a thin layer of snow on the ice
21.- hanki: a uniform layer of snow on the ground, especially if it is enough to ski
22.- huurre: frost; granular frost (like what's in your freezer, which is 25 degrees warmer than Finland in winter)
23.- härmä: frost

Snow words in Eskimo: hanki

Cold precipitations that have suffered human or animal intervention

32.- avanto: a hole in the ice
33.- Jotos: reindeer tracks in the snow
34.- Latu: a snow road to ski
35.- Rannio: a step for reindeer in deep snow

verbs for walking in the snow

36.- nirskua
37.- narskua
38.- Kirskua
39.- nitistä
40.- narista

Obviously, although there are in total more than 40 words to describe the icy precipitations and what happens with them, they are not very used. You will not find a Finn who uses these words among the most used in Finnish, as many Spaniards do not use most of the words that exist in Spanish, but a small part.

In the original list there are some more, which come from Finnish dialects and regional words from Lapland (for example "mora", which means "not compact snow on which you can not ski"), Tampere, etc.
